Ray Crafton Portrait

Born in Virginia, Ray is an eighth-generation descendant of James and Keren-happuch Crafton. His Crafton ancestors lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia until 1900 at which time they moved to Richmond. Rayís maternal ancestors were early settlers of Kentucky and his grandmother and aunt in Kentucky were noted genealogists and local historians. Ray traces his interest in family history to boyhood summers spent in Kentucky, sometimes accompanying his grandmother as she went about her research.

Ray spent most of his childhood in Maryland. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in mathematics and then joined AT&Tís Bell Laboratories. During his 30-year career with AT&T, Ray held a variety of assignments of increasing responsibility prior to his retirement in 2003. Along the way he received both an M.S. in operations research from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. Since retiring Ray has served on the boards of religious and charitable organizations, but is presently devoting full-time to genealogical research.
